One of JPS’s latest works can only been seen in the rain and looks like it is a technique being used in Seattle. But it’s Detroit that JPS has his eye on.
He has worked in disused places and when doing Pennywise at Barrow tiles and glass was blown off the roof landing close to him, but nothing too serious he said. There must have been a bit of risk on the train tracks too.
He doesn’t always work alone and it took a group to achieve the Alien piece. He hadn’t planned to do it in any particular season but is pleased with the lighting, red brick and lush green in the image.
Ideas can come from nowhere or are built up over time. The forklift work was visualised after seeing a gas box and then ended up with a plug. But it’s still Detroit he dreams of.
He lolled when asked if he would put a piece on Buckingham Palace. Politics and the monarchy are avoided and he hasn’t put his name on all of his work. Some he wouldn’t own up to, others he has come back and signed when it is safe and he doesn’t have to be recognised for everything he has done.
Recently he’s been working alongside Fawn and likes that she brings a bit of light to what he does. He’s painted on walls, stones, the pavement and plastic (here’s a bit more plastic too) and feels that painting in the ‘real’ environment is a ‘grey’ area that he ‘plays by gut instinct’ and something that has upset environmentalists at times.
It’s the dangerous environment of Detroit that still appeals though. He’s unsure whether he gets more of a buzz from work in a public place that people see or stuff in abandoned places and is fond of the location being part of the art. He’s saved money that way planning the setting and not having to paint backgrounds.
We keep coming back to America though.
Mainly because of Robocop and Eminem, that’s why. Will we ever see a JPS in Detroit? He’ll have to speak to his boss in Norway first.
